Four stars

I really liked this book. I think it started off a little slow, I didn't really care about her exploits at her school, or during her childhood for that matter. I really appreciate a narrator like Jane, she was incredibly independent, and acted unlike most people during that time period. I thought it was very refreshing that Jane was not spectacularly beautiful or attractive. Yet she was much stronger than most other protagonists that I have read. I also liked that Mr. Rochester was not really handsome or desirable, it made their relationship and romance a lot more believable to me. You will fall in love with them and root for them to be together. I liked the secondary characters and thought they all had a lot of depth, Mary and Diana in particular. St. John I found to be a one-note missionary character, but he was still admirable and tolerable. There were a few moments in which I face-palmed because of Jane's decisions, especially when she left Mr. Rochester's in the middle of the night. Overall, I think this is a very refreshing read in period fiction, and apart from a few slow moments, I thought it was great. It doesn't necessarily move you to feel anything deep or profound, but that's alright, not every book has to be that way.
