This book is prescient in many ways, positing a disaster brought on by a combination of satellite weapons and genetic modification gone awry. I read this many years ago. This read through I appreciated the handling of human nature in a plague/apocalyptic atmosphere. Do individuals cut their losses in order to keep human kind alive or do you help the afflicted knowing you're only buying them a little bit of time before their death. I couldn't give the book a five because the love interest seemed clunky and contrived. Otherwise this is a fantastic piece of speculative fiction.
