This was a dazzling, well-written account of a fictional Spanish expedition to explore the Native American lands to search for gold during the 1500s, told through the eyes of Muhammad, or "Estebanico", the black slave of one of the men. It is detailed, sad in places, and full of excitement. It shows both the Spanish conquistadors and the native Indians in not the best of lights, and it's interesting because everything here could have happened in real life - none of it is outside the realm of possibility.

This book is like Disney's "Pocahontas" met DreamWorks' "The Road to El Dorado" (without the happy, Disney-fied elements, of course), and had a baby which turned out to have many of the qualities of Richard Flanagan's "The Narrow Road to the Deep North" to boot. A weird description, I know, but that's what I kept thinking. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in history, expeditions, or colonialism (or anyone who thinks the above comparison sounds intriguing rather than insane) - I can already tell it's going to be one of my favorite reads of the year.
