it was amazing

This was the second Irvine Welsh book I read. It was a review by Tibor Fischer in the Times of Marabou Storks (also by Irvine Welsh) that made me buy Trainspotting and Acid House at Gatwick Airport. I enjoyed Trainspotting and never having seen the Edinburgh/ Leith dialect written down, had 5 minutes or so wondering what some of the words were. I had to call my aunt in Edinburgh to ask what some of the words actually meant. Irvine Welsh was way ahead of the rest of the Edinburgh storytellers. It's also very well recorded by a team of actors on RNIB Talking Books and they obviously knew what some of the words meant.

The book is set around parts of Edinburgh that were not then on the tourist trail and reflects the Edinburgh that I probably knew. The film was, however, shot in bits of Glasgow. Certainly part of Welsh's Edinburgh is now no more. The sequels to this were probably not as good, though I did enjoy Porno - also available on RNIB Talking books.
