I think I wanted more from this book, although it wasn't bad. Holmes has an engaging style, and the character Turtle is solid. There were no secrets to the book, & I found myself wondering how the plot would play itself out. I guess, in the end, there was an idea or two that I had that I thought would have been better than the actual ending. I also found it hard to believe that a pregnant young woman with such bad judgment as Turtle's mother is described to be, would have been able to make her way in the world in the 1930s. It says nothing about the stigma she would undoubtedly have faced as having an illegitimate child, nor the state of the country during the depression. Holm's makes it clear that life was inconvenient...but I have a rather starker image of what would have happened to that young woman.

Over all, a good read for youngsters. A lot of historical references, & a lively writing style.
