Christine So what do you think of the Magic Tree House series? I've never picked up any of them, but have thought about adding them to the shelf...

Elizabeth S I've been reading the series, in order, with Daniel (he's six). Last summer they were a real stretch for him, but interesting enough that he kept going. Now he devours them. Jack and Annie, the two kids, usually go to historical places like the Titanic or the Olympics in Greece. In Summer of the Sea Serpent they have adventures related to mythological creatures. It's good enough, solid writing, but I wouldn't say great writing. What I like about the books is how they expose kids to a variety of cultures, places, historical events, things that become common knowledge to adults. They give me an opportunity to discuss things with Daniel, which is why I read them too. There have been a lot of times when we refer to the books, like Daniel was asking questions about Australia and we said, "Remember when Jack and Annie went to Australia, and they saw...." It gives him something to refer back to.

Christine Hmmm... very good to know! Maybe I'll start sending these to my nephew Bradley, who's in First grade right now. Sounds like they'd probably be right about his speed... Merlin (age 8) just finished all the Harry Potter books. Not that he understood it all, but he was thrilled to announce that he'd finished!
