Out of the Dust is mentioned in the Read180 software and, for some strange reason, there is a huge pile of the novels in the teachers' workroom that I don't think anyone has ever read. Well, I read a copy.

At first I thought this was Grapes of Wrath for middle schoolers. It's so depressing! But isn't that what the Great Depression was all about? It was more than an economic depression; it was a depression and hopelessness of the spirit. Out of the Dust captures that grim spirit of survival in an unwelcoming time.

I have the audiobook and I think I'd like to hear the poetry/free verse read to me.
