Pekarkova absolutely blew me away with "Truck Stop Rainbows" and to a certain degree that voice is still here - strong, observant, unwilling to resort to cliche when it would be the easiest way to get past the hardest stories. Her characters are complex, and totally believable even when I have never met anybody like them. It's exciting to watch these suddenly familiar strangers move through their lives.
However, the book is seriously hampered by a lack of editing. Pekarkova apparently translated it herself, and it's a bold effort, but everybody needs an editor and non-native speakers doubly so. The errors are jarring and disrupt what would otherwise be a really magical flow.
