This is the prequel to Jennifer Ashley's Shifters Unbound series in which she reveals the secret of how the Guardian's sword came to be. It's set in 1400 Ireland and tells the story of blacksmith and shifter Naill and Fae Alanna. In years past the Fae enslaved and breed shifters to be used as hunters and fighters for the cold and calculating Fae. Ever since the shifters won their freedom there is a barely peaceful existence between the two races. Fae Alanna is sent to shifter Naill to encourage his compliance in making a magical sword that captures souls. Presumably the sword would be used against Naill's shifter race so he refuses until Alanna reveals that the Fae/Sidhe Prince Keiran (Alanna's brother) has kidnapped his children to force his assent.

Overall the story is way too short and the romance is pretty rushed but it's not bad. It gives a nice glimpse into the Shifter world and history and whets the appetite for more Shifters. I'm not kidding when I recommend you read this series, particularly if you like alphas, shifters, paranormal romance, close family ties (packs), lots of good lovin' and Irish accents...just to start.
