really liked it

Well, I completely understand why Sara Gruen's novel Water for Elephants is a best seller. I read the book in 3 very short sittings, probably the fastest I've ever made it through a full length novel, and not once did I feel like the story was dragging at all. Gruen has done an amazing job of blending action with detailed descriptions and never once feeling weighted down by those details. My only problems with the book were I felt that the narrator's (Jacob) story when he was young ended somewhat predictably. On the other hand, I loved how his older life ended in the novel, and did not see that coming at all. I also felt that parts of the story became very old-fashioned melodramatic. Gruen may have wanted this, though, as that was the style of story, film, theater that was going on at the time the early part of the story took place. The little things that ever so slightly bugged me really don't matter though, because when you have something that is this entertaining to read, even major flaws (which i don't think this book has) could get a free pass.
