really liked it
bookshelves: mystery

The Man with a Load of Mischief is a cozy, English mystery even though its author, Martha Grimes, is an American.

The Man with a Load of Mischief is an inn, an inn where a murder has occurred. In fact, unusual murders are taking place at several inns in and around the small town of Long Piddleton. Even though it is almost Christmas, Chief Inspector Jury of the Scotland Yard is sent to investigate. He suspects one of the townsfolk to be behind the murders, and it seems that most of them have something to hide.

The ending doesn't come as a surprise and is a touch overdone, but this is countered by some of the special touches: the joys of making footprints in new snow and of befriending overlooked children. This was my first mystery by Martha Grimes, but I certainly plan to read more.
