really liked it

Really should be 4.5 stars.

This books starts out really slow and was quite difficult to get into. The setting, the tone, the characters - none of them grabbed me. Pre-WWII England, a rich upper class family with the focus on an eleven year old girl... yawn. It takes a while to come into focus, but if you can get past the first 100 pages or so, you will be richly rewarded. In fact, it's the final chapter and its scant 19 pages that delivers the main emotional punch and changed the way I interpreted the rest of the book. Without this (frustrating at times) structure, the ending would not have been nearly as powerful. I've never read a book quite like this.
