As a steamy, erotic romance, it’s a perfect example of total wish fulfillment.

The main character has a parent, a sibling, a lover, an in-law and a spouse all bowing to her every need and wish, along with a palace full of servants. Everyone around places her needs and wants as being of prime importance. She is grateful and amazed at every turn as pleasure, love and luxury fall into her lap, so as not to put the reader off by appearing spoiled or unappreciative, allowing the reader to delight in both the thought of being her and the thought that there is nothing wrong with being treated that way, since it does the main character no harm.

As historical fiction however… the framework only loosely coincides with the history of the time period.

It might have been better for Kyle to have made this a fantasy world by filing the serial numbers off of 17th century France, but she clearly wanted to indulge in the world of Dumas fanfiction – and I can’t really blame her.
