The Best Kind of People
Zoe Whittall at her most assured, writing about fully drawn characters and diving deep into their motivations. The story centres around a male teacher's accusation of rape by some of his female students. Rather than looking at how this affects the teacher, the narrative looks at how this affects his family. His wife, teenaged daughter and grown son all deal with this differently and go through various emotions brought on by this horrible, stressy situation. I also loved how Whittall tackles the many prejudices and perspectives around rape by giving voice to all these views in the different characters.
