it was ok
bookshelves: appalachian, unfinished
Read from May 16 to 17, 2011

After about 40 pages, the book felt like homework. The characters are all misfits, but that can't be the sole problem because I loved The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. The prose style was a bit overly stylized, but not as ornate as The Infinities. So that probably wasn't the problem. There were some (what I felt were) gratuitous sex scenes, but maybe they were there to accent the dysfunctional relationship of those two characters. That certainly didn't help. I was drawn to the book because its set in WV at a racetrack, and I lived in WV near a racetrack. I hoped to learn more about racetrack subculture. I enjoyed learning about the circus subculture in Water for Elephants. This is my second unfinished book this week. Maybe the next one will click. This didn't.
