adult fans of smart historical fiction and bodice rippers
I really enjoyed this book: interesting and gripping historical story with explicit sex. I felt smarter at the end of it, rather than gross like some of the more exploitative books w/ sex I've read. The book actually follows a pretty Shakespearean gender-bending adventure of passion (for art and love), injustice, and miscommunication. The writing is dense and lovely, and requires attention when reading.
Set in pre-independence American colonies, we get to follow the lives of characters who are adjacent to the white, male political leaders who are covered in typical history books. I loved the descriptions of both the work (portrait painting) and the world (complicated, flawed early revolutionaries).
