Social realism. With horses. No but seriously, I didn’t realise that Monica is Charles’ great-granddaughter. The descriptions of neglected and ill-treated horses are quite harrowing. I’m not sure if the book is entirely successful as a novel, there’s something about the plot that doesn’t quite hang together in a way that is full satisfactory. I could see that she was trying to make social commentary about young offenders being given a second chance etc. I never saw the tv series of Follyfoot (well, only in passing) but I couldn’t quite equate the character of sensible and plain-spoken Dora in the book with the moody and purply-eyeshadowed girl on the tv. Darn it, I have to go on the interwebs now and remind myself of the theme tune…something about lightning trees, was it?
