really liked it
bookshelves: fiction

My first reading of anything Banana Yoshimoto, and this definitely won't be my last of hers. I really had no idea what to expect from this--I don't often read the summary of books anymore, since it's far more fun to see the story unfold, so it was fun to just dive in to something not knowing what I'd find.

The writing is simple, but moving. It felt to me the author (or the translator--I'm assuming both since the translator has won awards, so I'm going with him knowing what he's doing) was doing her best to use the fewest words for the most emotional impact.

An interesting, multi-layered story on love. Both of the main characters are coping with the loss of their mothers, and both are finding comfort in each other. There's some interesting mysticism and surrealism thrown in for good measure.
