I like the premise of the series - The Stand + Lord of the Flies - but the writing just doesn't work for me.

Too many sentence fragments. Too much overwrought repetition. Repetition that makes my head hurt. Repetition that makes my very soul ache. If all of the fragments were combined with existing sentences, and all of the parts that simply repeated the preceeding sentence in different words were cut out, this book would have been 300 pages instead of 590. I get that this writing style was a conscious choice, meant to echo the way teens actually think and talk, but it drove me nuts.

But maybe I'm missing the point... This is a series that begs to be read for the plot, not the writing. And on that level, Hunger delivers.

The Gone series is good for guys and girls who want scary, suspenseful survival stories and who won't be scared off by long books.

17.0% "There's a thin line between writing in an authentic teen voice and using zillions of sentence fragments and constant repetition because you're just not very good at writing. Grant is getting dangerously close to the latter..."
