This felt like an interim installment in the Liaden series – progress is made on a number of fronts but nothing is concluded. First, Theo does finally meet up with the ghost ship, Bechimo, but Bechimo himself still remains something of a mystery. Second, Theo does finally meet her Liadian family, and we get to watch them settle into Surebleak a little bit, but nothing is resolved regarding Theo’s relationship to Korval. Thirdly, the plots of the department of the interior are foiled yet again, but probably not in any permanent way, since it mostly happens off-screen. The one thing that is really and truly accomplished is that Theo manages to find Win Ton – but whether she succeeds in rescuing him is still up in the air at the end (although I am optimistic, of course). I was disappointed to get to the end of this novel and still not have resolution. I will have to hold out hope for the next installment.
