it was ok

This disappointing book preceded Krakauer's more successful "Into Thin Air".

I was frustrated on many levels with this story.

Chris McCandless was the product of a privileged upbringing, and he squandered it all in a fatally delusional attempt to drop-out of society under the banner of "idealism".

The author is clearly sympathetic to the romantic portrayal of McCandless as an idealistic genius who met a tragic fate.

However I find Chris McCandless and his ilk to be reckless idiots who are victims of their own self-absorption.

If you have time to waste, read the book - then you decide for yourself.
