I wasn't really sure what to expect with this book -- but when it was all said and done, I quite liked it.

I've also read Chocolate and Five Quarters of the Orange, by the same author, and this book had some of the same elements with regard to life in a small town in France, as well as the mystical qualities of food, herbs, and wine. There were enough believable elements of the story mixed in with the magical elements to make the story interesting --- and I thought it was charming that parts of this book were 'narrated' by a bottle of wine :)

It took me a few chapters to realize that this book is set in the same town, and has many of the same characters, as the book Chocolat. This book seems to be set about 5 years or so after Chocolat, though -- but it was nice to read about some of the same characters I enjoyed in Chocolat.

Overall, a good read -- a lucky find on a bookshelf in the Caribbean :)
