Friends to lovers...I'm a big believer in couples having a solid friendship before it turns into more and in The One That Got Away this couple has had 10 years of friendship and a few blips to finally begin to figure out that what they feel is more than friendship. I enjoyed this crazy, funny, and sexy story even when there were times I wanted to shake some sense into one or both of the main characters.

Best friends since junior high Jamie Kingston and Brynn Chandler have seen each other through good times and bad, relationship woes, sickness and health. After one kiss in high school they vowed never to speak of the incident again and though they were separated for 4 years of college, they've spent the years since together again as best friends. As their 10 year high school reunion approaches Brynn is convinced she's finally going to get to kiss the guy she crushed on all through high school and Jamie is trying to figure out a way to make her see that he's the one she really needs.

There was something so crazy about the way these two were in each other's lives, did everything together, enjoyed each other's company but couldn't figure out they were in love until push came to shove. More hilarious was the fact that everyone around them saw it, but they simply refused to go down that path. I loved the way that Jamie always told Brynn he'd be there to catch her and he wasn't just talking about her clumsiness and how Brynn was so proud of Jamie's accomplishments as a brew master. When they head out on a trip from Chicago to L.A. things really get interesting and come to a head and it is easy to see how terrified they both are of losing each other as friends if they become more.

There was a whole lot of emotion in this story and it was easy to feel what these characters were going through. You'd think as best friends these two would be great at communication, but when it came to sharing how they really feel about one another they really messed up repeatedly which in a way was part of the charm of this book. It boiled down to their friendship was so important to them that they worried they'd lose that if they didn't work out romantically.

For anyone who has fallen in love with their best friend, for anyone who loves road trip stories, and for anyone who can appreciate that sometimes love takes a whole lot of time and a few mistakes to get right then The One That Got Away is perfect for you.
