really liked it
bookshelves: classics, fiction, juvenile, read-aloud-to-boys

My boys, both the five-year-old and the eight-year-old, were enthralled and begged for "just one more chapter" every time I read to them. I'd read it when I was younger, but I'd forgotten just how much it differs from the Judy Garland movie. Silver shoes, not ruby slippers! And the kalidahs, hammerheads, and china country, too...

We enjoyed discussing the character's "quests" and how they already had what they were looking for, but didn't recognize it. The boys were confused by the green spectacles at first and how Dorothy's "green" dress turned white outside the city, so it was fun to see the light go on when they figured that out.

We're starting book number 2, The Land of Oz, next.
