Patti Smith has delivered with full-on presence the telling of her era with artist Robert Mapplethorpe. We become immersed in the artist's process, the mood of alternative NYC and the tone/dynamic of the Chelsea Hotel denizens. I have been a fan of Smith since 1978, saw her impressive dialog with David Susskind on Chicago TV, walked out of one of her Chicago concerts (in 1980?) and cooled considerably, and now am further moved by her grace and intelligence via this book and her later public offerings. (But, "She's a punk", you say? Check it out yourself.)
