Carter tackles multiple themes seamlessly, and truly develops the roles of both Emma and Jake's guilt, hope, and desires within each theme. She tackles the very taboo of letting oneself go in a situation where guarding yourself is number one. Every girl's deepest nightmare of being overpowered and over taken comes to light. Emma is developed nicely showing the power of emotions from the weakness to the strength with a will power Carter builds upon. Jake begins as the selfish alpha male but Carter creatively demonstrates how maturity and time develops a man into a respectable and responsible human being. Nineteen ends on a cliff hanger so be ready to jump into Twenty One.
