This autobiography by one of the greatest Chicago Bears football players ever was an interesting insight into the life of a black man growing up in poverty and becoming a successful man. He really digs into his feelings for football, his wife, and his friends. One example would be his retelling of his relationship with Brian Piccolo, a teammate and friend. Brian died after fighting a cancer for some time. Gale, knowing that this man was brave and strong and pure, gave a huge award, the Player of the Year, to Brian. It is through these passionate relationships that we can see Gale Sayers for who he is beneath his 200 lbs of muscle and speed. The other half of this story shows how dedication can take you anywhere you want. Although gifted with natural athleticism, Gale worked as hard as humanly possible to get back to the top after his injury, to become an African American stock broker, a father, and a huge donor and founder office own charity.
