** spoiler alert ** An arc was given to me for an honest review.

Our Song, the debut novel by Ashley Bodette, tells the story of two childhood friends trying to figure out who they are while on vacation together. Becca is a seventeen year old who is dealing with the fallout of an abusive relationship. Asher, eighteen, is trying to figure ou how to help Becca, while also trying to decide on a college path. The novel is told from 3 points of view: Becca, Asher, and Becca’s ex-boyfriend.
Our Song started off slow, but once the story got going, it kept me entertained. There were a few scenes that, at least in my opinion, weren’t very realistic. I don’t know any parent who would leave their teenage child once a threat was made against the child. The character of Becca seemed almost unrealistic. While one may be confident after an abusive relationship, she seemed to recover in less than a week. The ending scene in the woods seemed almost contrived in a way. While I agree that girls shouldn’t need a boy to save them, Becca seemed to be almost an unrealistic portrayal of this.
Overall, Our Song was enjoyable. While there were things I was not impressed with, the novel was a strong debut. The ending scene was adorable, and I plan on rereading it at some point. It was light and fun, and great for a rainy day. I look forward to seeing what Ashley comes out with next.
