Maybe I started reading fantasy when I was around 9 - w/ "The Hobbit". Sometime after that, a door-to-door saleman conned me into joining a Science Fiction Book Club. In retrospect, I'm glad I did. There was a time when I rejected SF as being too cheesy. That didn't last long. Eventually I realized that there was alotof great SF out there & that some of the pulp writers who might not've written more than a few bks often had visionary ideas of all sorts. Many pulp SF writers of the 50s, 60s, & 70s produced social commentary that might've caused controversy in another genre. Anyway, "The Ice People" isn't a favorite or anything but it does comment on the Cold War.
