really liked it

Having finally read this after a friend kept telling me how much she loved them, I found that whilst not being a huge fantasy reader, I loved this book! Jennifer Fallon has created a believable world in that magic is a dying art, the High Prince has no intention of running his country and the fate of Hythria basically boils down to an old magician (with no magic of his own), a teenage girl who's most obvious use is as a coveted prize to whoever will pay the most and an enslaved dwarf.

Whilst Jennifer doesn't have much loyalty to her characters, it doesn't detract from the story at all. In fact, her ruthless killings and changes of plot are a part of what makes this so easy to read - I simply had to see that the characters who caused such pain to my beloved favourites got their just desserts but I am still waiting on that score. High hopes for the next two in the trilogy to fulfill my expectations. If they're anything like this first one I'm prepared to be wow-ed by the unexpected.
