Maybe I set myself up when I read this because I read it directly after Courtney Milan, and her stories are honestly in a league of their own. However, I loved the premise of this with the 'Dashing Widows'! I also was a bit disappointed that there wasn't more time spent on the friendship between the three women, as that was definitely one of the draw cards for grounding the romance.
As for the romance it was... fine? Okay? Not my favourite. I appreciated Caroline but didn't think that Silas did a very good job of wooing her, or respecting where she was coming from. He came across very entitled, with none of the charm or other endearing qualities that could have softened that. I basically thought Caroline made a poor choice in him, which is not really what you want out of the romance.
It wasn't until the very end that this was mediated quite a bit, which is where this book gets 3 instead of 2 stars for me. It was a bit on the 'too little, too late' side, but was just enough to scrape through.
I hope also that this is just a rocky beginning to the series and that the following books will be stronger and more enjoyable. I'm definitely interested in reading more about the women - they were fully fledged and interesting, complex characters. It's a shame that the male romance interest wasn't properly grounded for this.
