did not like it

I expected it to be funnier but only found it mildly amusing. The protagonist is an utter cad and I have no empathy for him, not like Alex in A Clockwork Orange. The plot is neat but unexceptional. The different threads may come together coherently at the end but so what? The Patrice-Aldous-Tarpin affair came to end in a fortuitous and wicked way but it was unexciting. The author could learn from the master John Irving as to how to end an affair, ala Helen-Michael Milton in The World According to Garp, the way it was "severed" was both funny and painful. I did enjoy the "crisp" story, even with the explanation of the "unwitting thief" literary device. I did not know what to make of all the extended saving the planet passages. If that was the main thrust of the novel, it was lost in translation. Overall, forgetable.
