really liked it
bookshelves: pure-fantasy

A really good continuation of the story started in Raven's Shadow. More development with Tier and Seraph's family. Alot of backstory (indeed all of it) on the magic of this world - that is, what the Travelers are, what the 6 orders of Traveler magic are, what the Shadowed is, who the Stalker is. It's nice to know that some authors can pack a really great story into a tight little book like this!

I particularly enjoyed getting to spend more time with Jes and Hennea. Their romance sparkles in this book, perhaps because it is so unexpected. This is a gift of Briggs', in all her work I think, making real connections between people. I also enjoyed Phoran in this book again, and how he appreciates the place he finds in Seraph's family. Seraph herself is still prickly and wonderful. Tier is a little less pivotal in this one, as his condition is a part of the obstacles that must be overcome.

In all, a satisfying fantasy book. The themes of family and balance are throughout, which kind of leaves you with a good feeling. I did struggle a little with some of the bad things that happened, particularly to children, but ultimately Briggs won me over because the worst of those became an important plot element, and wasn't just thrown in for shock value as I sometimes feel is done.
