4.5 STARS! Wow!

I must say that I have not been the biggest fan of historical fiction, but I may be now. I started this book slowly, struggling with the flow of language used back in the 1600's. Then it was like I entered a time machine and I was right there. I would close the book literally thinking thoughts in that same form of speech an hour after! I cried at the end and I can tell I will be thinking of the characters for a long time to come. I am native and was born and raised on the reservation, so I had a strong interest in this story from the introduction of Caleb. Caleb is a "heathen" from one of the tribes near Bethia's colony. She meets him as a boy and together they grow up and they learn from one another. He is torn between the gospel and his own people's spirits and ways. Bethia writes of the toils of her hard life and I wish I could take on the chores of my life with her same acceptance and faith in God. There were so many male characters in her life, some got under my skin, some made me smile, and some made me a little hot. :) But the leading man in Bethia's life missed the mark for me, I didn't really feel their love or passion the way I had hoped I would. I think I was hoping she would end up with someone different though. The ending was so beautiful....but I don't want to give anything away! ohhh beautiful work of art Geraldine Brooks! I would have given it five stars except that sometimes I got a little cross eyed reading about all the Latin and Hebrew lessons.
