really liked it
bookshelves: history, non-fiction, jewish, torah, biography

As you may recall, I recently read another biography of the Chasam Sofer, The Light from the West, and in my review, I said that it read like a novel. This one was only sometimes novel-like, but on the other hand, it seemed more detailed and well-researched. I'm glad I read the books in the order I did. The Light was the lighter read, which gave me general background. This book, which corroborated much of what I read in the former, deepened that knowledge. Now I hope I can get hold of one of this author's sources: a translation of the actual diary the Chasam Sofer kept during the Napoleonic wars. I have a feeling it won't be easy.
