I waiver between 3 and 4 stars. I thought the story of a wealthy Parsi woman in India and her low-caste Hindu house servant was well written and interesting. The story wove together well. Perhaps the best story line was the hope that her granddaughter, Maya, would become educated and be able to do more with her life because of that education. Interestingly, Maya means illusion, so I was trying to work out what Umrigar was trying to imply by this.

While the book was decent, it was not overly original. It seemed like a story I've read/seen/been told many times over, which is why I settled on 3 stars.
