it was amazing
bookshelves: non-fiction

An excellent, highly readable account of this most disastrous of all the battles in which New Zealand soldiers have fought. Harper's tone is measured, but with a clear undertone of sorrow and even anger at the horrifying waste of life.

Full of detail from a rich variety of sources, including official accounts, diaries, letters and oral histories, it's clear that the author is careful to be even-handed when investigating how and why decisions were made, and describing the dreadful outcome of these decisions.

Diagrams and maps make the descriptions of troop movements easy to follow, and photographs add to the impact of this impressive work.
