The One-in-a-Million Boy

This is the season of the Jewish High Holy Days.....
A time to reflect - a time for moral self-assessment-seeking forgiveness from others we have harmed- making amends as appropriate.
This story fits with the season!!!
In Monica Wood's book....."The One-In-a-Million-Boy"......
After the loss of his son, a father carries on the boy's commitment to a 104 year old woman, named Ona.
The father was resistant at first....but because of the boys devotion and obligation to Ona, the father soon reaps the value himself -by obtaining a terrific friend and perceptibility about himself. In the most unexpected way people and history come together.
This is a beautiful story about unusual friendships.
The writing is poetic, humorous, tender & sensitive.
The universal themes of friendship, love, regret, forgiveness, and atonement are not sugar coated --not sappy - simply awe-inspiring and enjoyable!!

A 'sweet' year to you!

I loved that unusual friendship Elyse, and such well drawn characters. Don't think I can forget them. Thanks for reminding me of them and the wonderful themes of this story!
Ron, it was wonderful and reading your review… And seeing that soft side of you was endearing. Paul often says to me.."don't you dare tell anybody that I cried that.....film,book,or last week ... a memorial service. When I was reading parts of it, I even remember the time when I was a little girl, and nobody was home at my house during the day after my dad died, and there was an old woman who live by herself in a house on our block... and I remember going over there and just sitting and talking with her. Just she and me, I don't remember her name today, and I don't remember for how long it went on but I hadn't thought about it and years until this book.
Wait a sec Elyse ... Did we finish the book on the same exact day and we celebrate the same holiday too ??I'm in the grocery store parking lot getting ready to get food for tomorrow night lol
Happy New Year !!!
Linda ---isn't that a riot? L'Shannah Tovah ......
Sounds like Trump is going to be a good boy tomorrow too. You must be so glad that you don't live in this country right now. Shhhh lol
Have a great dinner - and enjoy services if going.
Angela....yeah. I thought about that. I wonder if anyone's written the author... and if she has given any reasoning behind her choice. Have you read other books by Monica Wood? I think I'm
going to. Xoxo
Elyse , I did send her a note . She said in an interview that I read that she saw the boy as more of a presence. I told her I really wished he had a name . She said a lot of readers have felt that way and I should feel free to name him. I haven't. I read her memoir We Were the Kennedys and l loved it . I totally related with my Catholic school background !
Hi Beverly.... thanks and sure is: so sad and so sweet. Both! Its been the most relaxing couple of hours... I’m typing into my phone from a Korean Spa — I come here once in a blue moon to enjoy all Spa treasures then read on their warm marble floor- with pillows and blankets to rest after feeling refreshed and squeaky clean. Books I read here seem to become VERY INTIMATE... so quiet and peaceful.
Hugs Beverly!
Angela—I can just imagine- Monica Wood... must’ve gotten asked that question I thousand times. So? Have you name him? Whatever you choose — I’ll call him what you name him!!!💕
