Speaking as a foreigner who was never taught about using commas or constructing compound sentences, I found The Elements of Style informative. For most of my life, I have been trying to imitate the writing of native speakers, relying on my instinct rather than any real knowledge, so I dare to say the book might have increased my understanding of the language. Of course, even I realise that the rules are not as absolute as Strunk presents them; however, I still wish I had read the book years earlier. It could have saved me a lot of time.
