I may have read this a bit too young, because I know I felt confused throughout the story, but I still think about it often and would be tempted to re-read just to see what I missed.

The two things I always remember are that her family shared a phone with their neighbors through a party line (something I had never heard of before) and the scene where she's forced to eat tongue. Gross.
