Norwegian Wood is different from all of the Murakami novels I have read and loved. There were no larger than life archetypes and no magic realism. Rather than being about greater concepts like the clash of culture and technology, this one was a simple coming of age novel about a boy growing up in the sixties. Well, as much as one can call a Murakami novel simple. It had interesting characters and an unusual storyline, but it lacked many of the things I love about Murakami novels. Nonetheless, this was a work of literature, complete with deep love, personal tragedy, and set against the backdrop of the turbulent sixties. There was nothing not to like.
