it was amazing
bookshelves: ebook, fiction, 5-star-reads, prepper-fiction, apocalypse

When I opened this book I had mixed feelings-excitement to see how it was going to play out, and a bit sad that this was the last book! I was not disappointed by what the author served up.

Sheriff Branson, Jeb and Rosie are being held by the IS troops and a rescue is being planned with the help of Clint's people and the General wants to reach out to some of the militia which divides opinion with the RV group. Sarah and Hank have to flee their new home when her friends let slip where she is to the wrong people. As they plan possible traps for the rest of IS, the terrorists are on the move and coming for the RV park so is it time to flee again?

I don't know where to start with this one! There is so much packed into this final adventure. The group are keen to rescue the three hostages and gather help from a militia group who agree to attack the RV park as a diversion for the hostage rescue. But a mole in the group somewhere is determined that the fake attack doesn't go quite to plan and puts the RV park at risk. As this is unfolding the attempt to rescue the hostages begins so this is a full on nerve jangler as we wait to see if everyone comes through alive. Other action occurs as Frank takes a group to Boise in the hope of setting a trap for the men trying to snatch his daughter.

The UN are still a real threat and are putting up roadblocks to search for weapons again. When they start searching RV parks across Utah it is clear who they are looking for and why. They are determined to find Frank's group and the other groups responsible for attacks on them, including their militia allies who are forced to flee south. Sarah and Hank realise that they have been tracked to Montana and need to flee as the town is too small to hide in and Frank decides they need to be rescued, splitting his team in two.

The General and Hopper decide that a full attack on the enemy base at Carlsbad has to be attempted to try and end the war, especially with IS planning to send forces north to attack the RV park. They plan to leave the RVs behind to fool the enemy into thinking they are still there as they sneak south...but that plan gets shot to pieces when Jerry discovers that IS are coming now and are less than eight hours away so an emergency evacuation is ordered and panic sets in. This reminds me of the early days in the story where the group are on the run and trying to find somewhere to hide, except this time they need somewhere safe to launch an attack from. Will each group get to a new park safely?

Everyone who has survived so far are getting ready for the final battle. Ned's team and the militia are going to explore the caves to see if they can find anyone before the attack begins. The General tries to get air support to attack IS as they leave the Kansas RV park. Frank is in charge of communications and everyone else prepares for battle. The tension is just dripping out of the book by this point and I was wondering how many of my favourites were going to survive. The battle itself was exciting and well written, and was a fitting ending to an excellent series for me. I also liked the fact that we had an epilogue 15 years on which updates us on what happened to the characters. I like it when there is a proper conclusion to a story.

Two things stand out in this book-character and plot. To get a really good book and series you need to have both and this certainly delivered. I like a lot of action and don't need a lot of pointless description so I took to this series straight away. There was always an attack or a plot or a twist going on to hook the reader and various interesting story threads wound together. The characters were brilliant and I loved that it focused on a lot of retired people instead of just young fit heroes, people who are like your parents and grandparents and it was easy to care so much about what happened to them. When you put both together, you get a great series and I gave every book five stars for the sheer entertainment it provided me.

And so the series is over. I actually just wanted to pick it up and start reading it again but had to remind myself that my tbr was too big to do rereads at the moment. I really hope to see this released in several paperback omnibus books at some point. The good news is that there are three current spinoffs to keep me happy-Bug out Texas, Horror Road and a series about George and Malcolm's work. I look forward to reading these books soon.
