really liked it
bookshelves: romance, steampunk, read-in-2011

Unexpectedly (but impressively) detailed world-building and a cast of delightful, well-developed secondary characters make this steampunk romance a book you can sink your teeth into. Our setting is an alternate history England (conquered by the Mongol-like Horde in its not-too-distant past, who forced its people to infect themselves with nanites to survive), also plagued by krakens and zombies. Our Heroine is an intelligent mixed-race police inspector with (understandable) intimacy issues. Our Hero is a former war hero/ship captain and a bit of a sex-crazed jerk (hence, the 4 stars). But there's enough depth, adventure, and really GOOD characterization to make this much more than a paranormal romance.
