really liked it
bookshelves: crime, los-angeles, noir

This is my second Ellroy novel. It is excellent and I loved it. My one comment would be that I feel like Ellroy may have still been a tiny bit tentative in his voice at this point--at least compared to the full-blown dominance he had nailed by the time he wrote American Tabloid. The book is a love/swansong for his murdered mother, and his personal obsession with her unsolved death is a tough ghost through the novel, and feeds the brilliant and dirty and brutal and perverse acts and dialogue. I can't wait to read the next in his LA Quartet.
