** spoiler alert ** Familiar setup - a mysterious stranger arrives in a small remote town, and gradually enchants the locals. Fidelma, married to an older man, is more enchanted than most. But in a welcome twist, the stranger isn’t just some fugitive petty thief, but a notorious war criminal who has improbably become a New Age mystic healer. You almost want to sympathize with the man until you realize that his transformation has nothing to do with righting past crimes - to the end, he feels he has done absolutely nothing wrong. Fidelma’s lonely story is moving, though diluted by too many backstory monologues from auxiliary characters.
