Tom is a damaged war veteran, recently assigned a post as a lighthouse keeper on an island near the coast of Australia. When he meets Isabel, the young and wide eyed daughter of a local family and after a boat washes ashore with an abandoned baby and a dead man, he realizes that the life he had envisioned for himself has changed forever.
The prose in this novel gets all the stars. Stedman is an evocative, elegant and beautiful writer and her descriptions of time and place were transporting. Normally with debut novels, there is something about the storytelling that feels...debut. This didn't read that way at all. I look forward to other books by Stedman.
Oh and also, I found out that there is a film version of this forthcoming starring Michael Fassbender so hummuna hummuna there.
