really liked it
bookshelves: vampires

Surprisingly, this book was actually alright. If you exclude the plot, which in all honesty, was very contrived, the book is decent.

However, there are a few things I did not like at all.

First of all, although clearly there is an attempt at exploring Vlad's character and personality, his behaviour in this book is very inconsistent with the previous book. Sure, he is supposed to be a mean, flame-throwing vampire, but when did he get so... puerile? People change, but really, there was nothing to justify the change from a reasonable, serious person to one that beats Cat up just because she asks for it. It's just not something you'd expect from Vlad.

Secondly, Don's cancer was annoying and put in the book just to have some drama. It also doesn't really make sense that he didn't want to be made a vampire since it appears that everybody around Cat jumps up at the mere thought of being turned. Now what really bothered me was making him a ghost! What was the purpose of him not wanting to be turned into a vampire/ghoul if he didn't really want to die either, so he got stuck as a ghost?
