Although I've only given this book 2 starts this is not to say that it wasn't a good read. It just wasn't my kind of book. This new take on the Cinderella story are similar only on the aspect of Ash having an 'evil' step mother, and that she is left on her own to find her path. There isn't a fairy God-Mother BUT there is a fairy in the mix. One that seeks to have Ash by his side. It took me awhile to accept that this was not at all like the original where she later on ends up with whom I thought it would be...i.e. Prince Charming. However, this was a raw, lyrical, and emotional take on the homosexual standpoint. I wouldn't give this to my kids until they are able to understand, but this was definitely a good out of the norm read. Articulately written, subtle in the introduction of a same-sex novel, and effective sensory descriptions.
Can't wait to see how different or similar Malinda Lo's writing style will be on her prequel to Ash (Huntress).
