Steinbeck's book on the struggle between good and evil.

Adam and Charles Trask are raised by their stern father to become soldiers. But even as boys, they are at war. Adam's gentle passivity enrages the fiercely competitive Charles, and Charles' agony is that his father loves Adam more.

Adam's path crosses with the evil and amoral Cathy Ames, and she snares him in her web. They marry and she becomes a force that will poison the future generations of two families.

I thought the characters were well developed, terrific read.
