*Whew* Finally finished this one... While I ended up quite enjoying it in the end, I had a really really hard time getting into this book for a few reasons: Firstly, it literally takes the first 1/3 of the book just to introduce all of the characters, of which there are about a million of them. I understand why there are so many - now we get to see every point of view possible, but it took a long time to figure out who was who and get to know everyone. Secondly, this is a series about the Civil War and it felt a little more stereotypical rather than authentic - everyone in the South was evil and bad, everyone in the North was noble and great... I just don't think the issues were as black and white as she's making it seem. When I read "Gone With The Wind" I felt like I was seeing a truer version of what life was like in the South during that period. I was well over half way through when I finally started enjoying it. But now I know all the characters, I'm into the story, and I'm very excited and eager to read the next one. A great series if you're wanting to learn about the Civil War.

Jessica i really liked this series! i remember i started reading it RIGHT after grace was born and thinking that it was so dumb of me to do so, because i was up all night with a newborn and then during the day when i should have been napping while the baby was, i was reading instead.
